CCHS

Centre for Counselling and Health Services

Introduction

About us

The Centre for Counselling & Health Services (CCHS), an integral part of the University, is a student and faculty support service, providing emotional and psychological support, medical first aid and basic health services. CCHS is an enthusiastic team of expert counsellors and Medical Officer , the Centre endeavours to provide a nurturing environment wherein students are empowered to adapt to the dynamic environment, harness the best of their resources and face life challenges while achieving their academic goals.

Activities

Parent meetings:

The centre organises two parent meetings every academic year between parents and faculty including deans, heads of departments, the Registrar and the Vice-Chancellor. These dynamic and interactive sessions are aimed at exchanging ideas and collecting constructive feedback, if any, from the parent community, with the goal of enhancing the overall experience of the student.

Special mentoring for International, NRI & Differently-abled students:

The Centre attempts to provide a warm and congenial atmosphere for its foreign and NRI students, and support when they are homesick or have language difficulties. Along with the International office, the Centre orients them to the institutional and academic policies. Counsellors also reach out to them by participating in their fellowship gatherings so that they feel comfortable to approach the counsellors in times of need. Counsellors work individually with these students to ensure that they understand assessment patterns, teaching methodologies and the expected code of conduct on campus; guiding them in local etiquette and giving them pointers that would help them even outside campus. Counsellors also help in providing a warm and welcoming environment for students who are differently abled by reaching out to them in various ways. Differently-abled students receive individual support from the Counsellors, starting from the time of admission and extending through their course. The counsellors work with the Examination Office to obtain for these students, privileges during exams, for example, language exemptions, extra time, scribes, exclusive and easily accessible exam halls etc.

Personal counselling:

The Counselling approach by CCHS involves both walk-in (voluntary) counselling and the referral of the students by the faculty. Regular student-counsellor interactions and personal counselling result in inclusiveness to student life and coping mechanisms to students in need of support.

Awareness Programmes

Various enrichment programmes are organized by CCHS in order to create awareness on a healthy lifestyles, personal safety, mental health, substance abuse and communicable and lifestyle diseases; providing open platforms for students to learn and share experiences with regard to issues which influence their health and well-being.

Academic Counselling:

The CCHS team regularly monitors the attendance pattern of each student and invites them to discuss the challenges that keep them from attending classes. Counsellors collaborate with the academic departments to identify slow learners and less motivated students; and arrange remedial tutorials and peer learning. Counsellors also meet students who have underperformers, to assess their study habits and areas of difficulty, mutually arriving at strategies to overcome them.

Peer Education:

Peer education is a Certificate Course (optional elective) which carries 2 credits; offered by the CCHS to the second year undergraduate students. The course, which aims to mould the candidates into “Peer Educators,” is based on the impact of peer influence during adolescence. Peer Educators, in turn, create positive attitudes and permeate a strong and healthy value-base among the youth that they come in contact with. The selected students undergo intensive training on topics like Life skills, Inclusiveness and Personal Safety through lectures, role plays, interactive sessions, group projects, field trips and mentoring sessions. The Peer Educators then work as volunteers alongside the counsellors, run life-skill based initiatives and also take the lead in organising and implementing awareness programmes.

Psycho-educative sessions:

These interactive sessions are conducted by the counsellors for all the first year undergraduate students on topics such as managing relationships, self-esteem, body image etc.; motivating them to make healthy life-choices.

The major activities of the Centre include:

Induction counselling: Through an interactive session, newly joined students and their parents are oriented, by the counsellors, to the campus culture and academic practices followed at the University. They are briefed about the academic assessment patterns, the required code of conduct and dress, the attendance requirements and information regarding the other centers and activities.
