DVK Central Library

 

DVK Central Library, providing unique services in ecclesiastical learning, is a key academic centre on the campus. The newly constructed central library is fully automated and has modem infrastructure. Functions of this library are spread over a multi-storey building with forty five thousand square feet space. The concept of the Central Library is a collective form of different libraries and subsidiary facilities. This library, with its functions, features, and structure, is unique among the Indian Ecclesiastical Libraries.

 

Important Functions and Features

  1. Book Library: There are around 1, 00,000 volumes of books in this library. The important components of the book library are: Reference Library, Lending Book Library, Thesis Library, Text Book Library, Reserved Books, Professors' Library, and Rare Books Library.
     
  2. Periodicals Library: At present we have around 25,000 bound volumes and around 400 current titles. The important sections of the Periodical Library are: Current Periodicals Section, Back Issue Section, and Bound Volume Section.
     
  3. Digital Library: It is a modem concept. Here students explore information from the digital world. The important components are C.D. Rom, Data Bank, Internet Facility, Web Portal, E-Journals, E-Books, and Electronic Work Stations. There is a facility for the students to take their academic print by a single click with prepaid digital print account system. We provide a document scanning facility to the students at free of cost.
     
  4. Search Centre: This is a spacious counter meant for electronic search. The users can enjoy different types of search facilities through the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). The web OPAC version is available in the following URL

  5. Multi-media Centre, Programme Comer and Conference Room: These areas are well-equipped for short-duration programmes like Classes with multimedia presentations, Seminars, Thesis Defense; "Meet the Author" Programme, special training programmes, workshops, conference, videoconference, video watching and different types of academic discussions, and other academic events.
     
  6. News House: This is a new attempt by the library to sensitize library users on current affairs. The important components are: Newspapers, News Boards, News Channels and News Discussions.
     
  7. Wisdom Vibrating Scheme: This is a new attempt to vibrate wisdom in the entire campus. During main courses in the Athenaeum the Library will facilitate various exhibitions, demonstrations, quiz programmes, etc., with the help of the concerned faculties.
     
  8. Map and Photo Gallery: It is a visual aid to stamp important figures and maps in the mind of scholars.
     
  9. Garden Library: With the objective of promoting a contemplative/reflective reading, we extend our reading environment to the garden/eco-friendly open-air area.
     
  10. Research Cubicles: The Library facilitates a special compact research environment, namely, "Research Cubicles." These cubicles are available to Professors, Lecturers, Research Scholars, etc. with advance booking and other formalities.
     
  11. Collaborative Learning Centre: The existing Free Reading Area and Exhibition Area modified with a Collaborative Learning Centre. It is a facility for collaborative learning especially to the graduates and postgraduates. Here the students can conduct serious discussion, presentation, group learning and group project work etc.
     
  12. Property Counter: The library will not allow any baggage, books, files and other personal things, except a limited number of blank papers, laptop and electronic writing pad (without any bag) into the restricted area (through the Access Control Door). At the same time, the library facilitates a well-arranged property counter for keeping personal property.
     
  13. New Arrivals Display: The newly accessed books, CDs, stamps, coins will be displayed in the beautifully arranged new shelves in the entrance area.
     

Rules and Regulations

  1. Membership: All students of DVK are provisionally the members of DVK Central Library. After getting the DVK Identity Card, they can confirm their library membership. In the normal case, the membership will expire with the completion of the respective course. There is a possibility to get membership in the library for the ecclesiastical students and researchers with specified formalities.
     
  2. Admission: Without Identity Card, users are not allowed in the Research Area. In case somebody wants to enter without ID card, they have to register their name, time and other details in the “Gate Register” of the library. The users are not supposed to transfer their Identity Cards.
     
  3. Lending: A student may borrow 12 books at a time. A book is issued for a period of one month, which can be re-issued twice, if no one else demands it. Subsequent renewals will be allowed only after an interval of three days. A fine of one rupee per book, per day will be collected from students who fail to return the books on due dates. Reference Books, Thesis, Reserved Books, Books in the Professor’s Library, New Arrivals, and Periodicals should not be taken out of the library. Library books are not to be taken out of Bangalore. All books should be returned before the commencement of vacation. The special permission of the Librarian is required to retain a book during vacation.
     
  4. Thesis Library Use:  Thesis Library use is restricted for 1 hour with prior permission/formality.
     
  5. Silence: In general, moderate silence is to be maintained in all areas of the Central Library. The users have to keep absolute silence in the Research Area. After entering to the Access Control Door, nobody is supposed to use mobile phone or any sound making gadgets/equipments.
     
  6. Library Timings: Monday – Saturday: 08.00am to 08.00pm in academic days. Semestral Holidays and Christmas Vacation, the library will be open from 08.00 to 06.00pm.
     
  7. Holidays: All Sundays are holidays. There are holidays for library connected to Christmas, Easter and very selected important commemorative days (all the details are given in the page no. 53 of the calendar).Except reading, all other functions and services are available only from 09.00am to 04.30pm.
     
  8. Access to Library Stacks
     
    Monday – Saturday: 09.00am to 11.30 am
      01.00pm to 04.30 pm

 

  1. Table Reservation: Library is giving a special facility for senior scholars to do a special reservation to keep the reference/stack books at their specified tables for specified period. For this facility, they have to do reservation at Circulation Counter and they have to follow the rules.
     
  2. Every day 04.30 pm there will be a table clearance.
     
  3. Those who have reserved the books at their study tables and following the formalities, the table clearance people will not clear the books from the reserved tables for the specified period. The same time the books/table is not using regularly (more than 3 days) they will clear the books even it has under the reservation.
     
  4. After the use of the reserved books they have to return at Circulation Counter to retain the normal status of these reserved books. Personal notes should not be left in the library after 06.00pm.

Library Training cum Apprenticeship Programme

DVK Central Library has been organizing “Training cum Apprenticeship Programme” for the Graduates and Post Graduates in “Library and Information Science” since 2005 with the objective “to shape a citizen to build a Knowledgeable India.” It is a residential programme. Along with regular classes, trainees participate in various extension programmes like Library Automation, Personality Development and Communication Skills. They are also sent to the outdoor programmes like National and International Seminars, Workshops and Scholarly Lectures conducted by various reputed Institutions/Organizations.
