The department was established in 1967 with B.Sc Course in Botany. We have initiated the M.Sc Programme in Botany in the year 2015-2016. Graduation and Post Graduation in Botany is an intense and collaborative programme designed to provide students with teaching, research and soft skills required for a successful career. We welcome and encourage students of diverse cultures, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds to apply to our programme. We are strongly committed to promote innovative skills and competitiveness among our students as one of our core mission. The basic discipline of Botany encompasses all areas of study and scientific research related to plants. The study of plants also allows unique perspectives into the history and cultural evolution of societies across the globe. Students will study plants at the micro levels ranging from molecules, cells, tissue, organization of plant body, classification and naming of plants to the macro levels such as species, communities, ecosystems and its diversity. A good number of students of this department have been graduated from this college and well established in the society.
At present the department has four regular faculty members and 4 guest faculty members, who value teaching and mentoring and are committed to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. The department provides student support services through remedial coaching, mentoring, tutoring, Moodle courses and library resources. The department also hosts multiple programs related to curricular, extra-curricular and extension activities to promote community building and to encourage leadership and communication skills among the students. We also have two supporting staff members. As part of UG and PG curriculum, students have to complete their research projects in related disciplines of Botany which are done utilizing the infrastructure and lab facilities at the department. After completion of B.Sc. Degree programme, our students can opt for Post Graduation in Botany or any other higher studies. Some students have completed their M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree; and few are doing post-doctoral research. Many of our alumnae have cleared national level competitive examinations such as CSIR-NET, JRF, GATE, CAT and so on and are working in various fields including education, industry, research, and agriculture as well.
The department is having collaborations with various prestigious research institutions and industries all over Kerala, where our students are free to visit and do their internship and project works under expertised guidance.
The completion of course in UG and PG enables and equips the students to opt for higher studies in any of the following areas.
