Invited Lecture on 'Why Gandhi Still Matters'

The Department of History, in association with the Department of Economics and Women Development Cell of Vimala College, organised an invited lecture on ‘Why Gandhi Still Matters’ on 6th February 2019. Dr. K S Madhavan, Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Calicut was the resource person. Both UG and PG students attended the session.
Dr. K S Madhavan spoke about the relevance of Gandhian ideals in contemporary times. In this, he basically focused on the Gandhian ideal of non-violence and the method of Satyagraha. He also articulated the process through which icons like Gandhi are appropriated by political outfits whose ideology is diametrically opposite to the Gandhian one. During the course of his lecture, he also threw light on Gandhian idea of involvement of women in political activities during freedom struggle.
Mahatma @ 150 - Essay Writing Competition

As part of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Oct 2nd 2019, the Department of History, in association with the Department of Economics, organized an essay writing competition as part of the programme Mahatma@150. More than 30 students from various departments took part in the competition. The topic for essay was “The legacy of Gandhi in Contemporary Times”. Rebecca Mathai of BA Sociology grabbed the prize for the best essay.
